The town
A Bergen County
borough with a
very short commute
Leonia is a small, leafy borough in eastern Bergen County, tucked between Fort Lee, Englewood, Palisades Park and Ridgefield Park. It is the kind of town where families walk to the school pick-up — and it sits directly behind one of the busiest bridge crossings in the country.
That combination is exactly why we chose it. A Gracie Barra academy works best when it is a genuine neighbourhood fixture: somewhere a ten-year-old can be dropped off twice a week, somewhere a parent can train after work without adding forty minutes of traffic to the day. Leonia puts us inside that radius for a large slice of eastern Bergen County.
The academy itself is in Leonia’s commercial pocket rather than on a residential street, which means room for parking, room for a big open mat, and no reason to keep the noise down when the class counts out push-ups.

Reception and pro shop, looking in from the main entrance.
The building
5,796 square feet,
one clear span
The unit is a single-storey rectangle roughly 74 ft by 78 ft, with window openings on three elevations and two entrances. There are no columns chopping up the middle of the room — which is what makes a continuous competition-sized mat possible.
The mat
Around 2,850 sq ft of continuous Gracie Barra blue tatami with a red border, plus the roundel at centre mat. Big enough to run two classes side by side, or one very large one.
Reception & pro shop
An L-shaped reception desk sits at the entrance to the mat, with the Gracie Barra pro shop and a waiting area alongside it — gis, rash guards, belts and spare mouthguards.
Parent viewing
Tiered seating facing the tatami with a clear, unobstructed sightline. No glass wall, no craning over shoulders — you can actually watch your child’s class.
Changing & showers
Separate men’s and women’s changing rooms, each with WC, showers, lockers and benches, so you can train on the way to or from work.
Striking area
A run of hanging heavy bags along the north wall for Muay Thai and MMA classes, with mat underfoot and daylight from the window line.
Back of house
Office, storage and a mechanical room that also houses laundry — so mats and loaner gear get washed properly, on site.

What’s around
100 Leyland Drive
Leonia sits in a well-connected corner of eastern Bergen County: 800-plus acres of county parkland across the creek, three major highways within a few minutes, and a bus to Midtown from the top of the road.
Overpeck County Park
Bergen County’s 811-acre park wraps around Overpeck Creek immediately west of us, with the Leonia section entered off Fort Lee Road — running loops, open fields, playgrounds and the boathouse.
Route 46, Route 4 & I-95
All three are a few minutes out, so getting here from most of eastern Bergen County is a straight run rather than a crawl through side streets. Parking is on site, at the door.
NJ Transit
Leonia is on the NJ Transit bus network. The 166 runs express from Broad Avenue to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in around thirty minutes, and Fort Lee Road and Grand Avenue stops sit a short walk from the park entrance.
The George Washington Bridge
The New Jersey approach is minutes east. Buses run between the GWB Bus Terminal and Fort Lee Road in roughly a quarter of an hour, which puts upper Manhattan and the Bronx within easy reach off-peak.
Travel and transit times are approximate and vary with traffic, especially around bridge approach hours. Check your own route before your first class.
